International Festival of Historical Re-enactments "Everyday Life of Medieval Tarnovgrad"
On June 6, 7, and 8, 2025, the Middle Ages will once again return to Tsarevets Fortress in Veliko Tarnovo with the tenth edition of the International Festival of Historical Re-enactments "Everyday Life of Medieval Tarnovgrad."
Bulgarian and foreign historical re-enactment groups and independent reconstructors will turn back time to the 12th-14th centuries, when Tarnovo was renowned as "Second Constantinople" and "Third Rome." This was the era when the capital of the Second Bulgarian State was a majestic center of Orthodoxy and a sacred land/SACRA TERRA, where the relics of more than 15 saints were preserved.
Therefore, this year's festival edition will begin with a pilgrimage to the "Holy Forty Martyrs" Church – one of the most sacred places in the capital city, where Bulgarian kings were buried, the relics of St. Hilarion of Moglena and St. Sava of Serbia were kept, and some of the most emblematic monuments of Bulgarian historical memory are located – the columns of Khans Krum (803–814) and Omurtag (815–831) and of Tsar Ivan Asen II (1218-1241).
At Tsarevets Fortress, the event will feature re-enactments of medieval crafts and fashion, culinary demonstrations and tastings, archery, martial games, and tournaments. The daily life typical of the era will be showcased in reconstructions of camps, both Eastern and Western style. Royal tales and old legends will "come to life" in a puppet show for all ages.
On Saturday, June 7, the uprising of brothers Peter and Asen will be re-enacted, inspired by the belief that St. Demetrius of Thessaloniki abandoned his hometown to support their cause and the resurrection of the Bulgarian state.
A theatrical performance titled "The Last Patriarch" will be dedicated to the notable medieval Bulgarian cleric, man of letters, patriarch, and saint, Euthymius of Tarnovo. The performance, featuring actors from the "Konstantin Kissimov" Drama Theatre, will take place at the foot of the Palace.
The evening concerts on June 6 and 7, with free entry to Tsarevets, will also be held at the same location.
The International Festival "Medieval Tarnovgrad: SACRA TERRA" is organized by the Non-Profit Association "Tarnovtsi," Veliko Tarnovo Municipality, and the Regional Historical Museum, and is part of the Old Capital's Cultural Calendar for 2025.
Access to events at Tsarevets Fortress is free, with only the entrance fee for the architectural-museum reserve being charged.
The official opening of the International Festival of Historical Re-enactments is at 5:30 PM on Friday, June 6, at Tsar Asen I Square in front of Tsarevets Fortress.
